Self Esteem Workshops, a Thing of the Future?

Over the summer I saw a commercial for Dove. Instead of trying to sell me something, it showed a little girl being exposed to various forms of media showing her what she is 'supposed' to look like. It then described the new confidence-building campaign Dove is launching. They are spreading the word that beauty stereotypes are an extremely negative influence on women. Dove is stepping in and trying to help girls and women everywhere overcome these stereotypes and love their bodies, no matter their shape.
Here's the link to the Campaign for Real Beauty, so check it out and love that gorgeous bod! http://www.dove.us/#/cfrb/

I love the Dove commercials. Not only do they use different body types, but also include different colors of skin, not just white. Also, some of the commercials have included older individuals which you don't usually see. They celebrate the skin you’re in, no matter what. Fruit of the Loom also feature curvy women in their ads. As for the campaigns and self-esteem workshops, I know the MacCurdy House had an event last semester about loving your body. They went over various facts about BMI testing, ways to feel beautiful and even quotes from famous women. I still have the handouts. They should have it again! :)

The Maccurdy house's events are put on my each individual and I know I have the self defense workshop going this semester, but I will talk to the other girls about maybe doing it this semester or next. I'm sure it will be happening again this year as before. :-)

Yeah that would definitely be a cool idea to have a workshop here on campus about loving yourself, not your body type of thing. I first saw the new Dove campaign on Oprah and loved it. I think it is such a great idea to show women of all types and all sizes and all races are beautiful. All the young girls in our society are targeted and bombarded with unhealthy, skinny, & tall women showing them that that is what is to be desired, that is what men want, etc... I think it is high time a company like Dove has started a healthy campaign such as the Real Beauty Campaign. The young girls definitely won't be hearing it from anyone else...
